Headshot Review

I needed headshots for work that are not too stiff and show my personality. I also wanted some for family. Steve was a joy to work with and HE MADE ME LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER. Of course, I’m shouting! I’m 52 and his lighting was beautiful. No airbrushing, just lighting. If you look close, you can tell I’m starting to get wrinkles, but the lighting really diminishes them. And Steve had me cracking up so he got some laughing shots my family members love. The one you see here <<< that tiny head shot, that is the one I chose for work. I think you can click my link and see a few more. You can also see how this one looks in full length. They were not all identical and it was a very hard choice. When you go to Steve’s full web site, take a look at the commercial, travel, weddings and architecture shots. Wow. Walking around in the studio feels like being inside of a National Geographic magazine.”

Steve was on our venue’s preferred list. After reviewing his website, he was the first photographer, with whom I made an appointment. After our meeting & impressed with his pictures, I hired him without coordinating with my fiancé or reviewing any other photographers. We’re so glad we did.

Steve has a terrific and calming personality for photographing large (or small) events where either emotions run high or conditions are not ideal. He is a problem solver, has a passion for every shot and possesses a fabulous photographic eye.

Our wedding took place at a farm/vineyard. The ceremony & cocktail hour were scheduled for outdoors and the reception was inside. However, mother nature decided to rain the morning of and weather reports differed as to when it would stop. Because of weather uncertainty, Steve arrived much earlier than scheduled, in order to set up his equipment in the barn if needed, and more importantly, to see how I, the bride, was handling a potential schedule change. With the soggy ground, and dark clouds above, he looked at me with assurance and said “we’re going to make this work.”

Steve knew we wanted to include our motorcycles in our photos but given the weather, it was uncertain whether outside would be possible. Using his skilled artistic, photographic eye, he found a spot in a equipment barn. It was a great area and the photos were fabulous!

While I could go on and on about how he recorded superb memories of our wedding, I will only say wonderful things about Steve and his photography. He is a consummate professional who puts heart and soul into every photo and is an extraordinary photographer that we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND anytime, anywhere.

Steve Whysall to the rescue! With our ceremony only three days away; we got word that our out of town photographer would not be able to make the ceremony. We were faced with two choices at that point. *First being that we just go on with the ceremony and realize that we would not have pictures of our special day. *Second choice, and admittedly a long shot; was to see if a local photographer just might be available and willing to take on a last minute job (yes, I know you are thinking “that’s nut’s; plans like these are made up to a year in advance!”). So, off to the Internet I went. I viewed the local photographers, and found myself returning to Whysall Photography, LLC several times. Steve’s credentials impressed me, and he stood out from the crowd. I thought to myself; “If your going out on a limb to attempt to hire a photographer in the eleventh hour; go big! This guy was at the top of his class at the Corcoran, and worked with National Geographic! I made the choice to send Steve an E-mail explaining my situation, and inquired if he was available for a last minute shoot. After sending the E-mail, I began looking at the other area photographer’s for a second choice; thinking I might get a response the next day from Steve, saying he was busy that Saturday. I don’t think that more than 30 minutes had passed when I got a response from Steve! He had a family commitment that Saturday, but would be agreeable to helping us out. What a stroke of luck! We then spoke on the phone to iron out the details. The next day, I got a call from Steve; he wanted to meet us and see the church to get an idea what he would need for lighting. Steve came to our home (so very impressive) and spent some time going over what types of shots we were interested in getting, as well as getting a feel for our personalities. We then we went to the church so he could see what lighting he needed for the church. The next day, Steve and his assistant arrived at our home where we did some outside shots before the sun went down (our’s was a 6:00 p.m. ceremony) taking advantage of the natural light. We were then off to the ceremony, then returned to our home for the reception. Steve and his assistant were so great, very unobtrusive and easy going. A delight to work with. We can’t say enough about how impressed we were that Steve took the time to meet us prior to the ceremony! We have great candid shots of our guests and love the creative shots of us outside. Steve is a pro through and through. You see it as he is working, and you see it in his photo’s! Without reservation; we highly recommend Whysall Photography, LLC, and are thrilled he was there to shoot our event! “

We absolutely loved working with Steve Whysall for both our engagement photo shoot and our wedding. Steve is open, honest and encourages couples to meet with him beforehand to see if it’s a good fit. Having a good relationship with your photographer is vital to getting the memories you want captured. Steve prefers to do more artistic photographs rather than your standard wedding posed pictures. If you want standard group shots makes sure to provide a list and remember what pictures you want- in the craziness of the day we forgot to get pictures with our entire immediate families- we have pictures with our parents, just not with them and our siblings. However, the couple portraits we have are amazing- be open to climbing onto trucks or walking through the woods barefoot! Have an open mind and let Steve’s artistry take over you won’t be disappointed. In terms of pricing he is comparable to other photographers, we really like that we have joint copyright and own all of our engagement and wedding photos. Def. take advantage of the engagement photo shoot- it gets you comfortable with Steve’s style and if you’ve never taken professional pictures before, it familiarizes you with how to take photos before the big day. We loved working with Steve and absolutely recommend working with him for your wedding or special occasion.

Engagement Session in DC + Wedding in Alexandria + newborn photos 3 years later

I Honestly cannot say enough good things! When we first saw Steve’s work online, we knew right away that we wanted him to capture our wedding. Then, when we met him, we were even more sure. Not only is his photography breathtaking, but more importantly his personality is so inviting and “easy” that we knew he would be a perfect fit for our big day. In the months leading up to our wedding he was great about keeping in touch with us and making sure he knew exactly what vision we had for our day. He was also very accommodating with regards to timing and weather considerations. On the day of, he was there early (even though we were late) and was ready to work! Steve was great at recommending our posed shots, but he was also great at capturing those special “candid” moments- the ones where you think no one is looking. He captured every moment and emotion of our day. Steve was a pleasure to work with. We laughed, we joked, and it really shows through our pictures. I can’t thank Steve enough. My husband and I didn’t have a traditional wedding. We eloped and had an “announcement” session (instead of a traditional “engagement” session); however, with Steve’s help, we won’t ever feel like we were missing out. We have wonderful memories and even better photos of our wedding to look back on. When planning your wedding, you should make sure that your photographer is the BEST because those photos are the one thing you can look back to years later. Steve is absolutely the best!

Wedding Review

Steve was one of my favourite vendors from the beginning, because his response to emails was amazingly fast, which made planning from a distance easier. Steve always tried to make time for us when we were in the area. He tried to get all of the posed shots (which he knew we weren’t that bothered with) done and out of the way as quickly as possible. I normally don’t like having pictures taken because I never look good in them, but he somehow made me look pretty in them. His assistant, Patrick, was given the difficult job of photographing my husband who generally forbids people from taking his picture. Patrick was aware and understanding of this fact and somehow picked some really cool shots which made the situation fun for my husband and his party. Both Steve and Patrick were unobtrusive when taking all the candid shots, and it was great to see the results of having two perspectives throughout the wedding. They got some really cool shots of us dancing (which Steve knew was important to us based on one conversation I had with him almost a year prior), playing badmiton, and the guys drinking and smoking. Steve always seemed in control of what was going on with a shot, but his laid back attitude kept things easy and light. He was great to work with and I hope he had as much fun shooting our wedding as we had having him photograph it. We were very pleased with our experience with him and the end product, in fact my sister will be having him photograph her wedding in a few months.

My husband (who’s favorite hobby is photography) saw one of Steve’s books at a vineyard we looked at for our wedding but ended up not booking. Johann was insistent on trying to get Steve for our wedding, and I’m so glad he was! Steve was so laid back and in control the entire day, which made our wedding so much more enjoyable. He took some really beautiful and creative photos for us - everyone has complimented on the one they’ve seen. His style is also to take the bride and groom away for 10-15 minutes throughout the course of the reception to get creative shots with varying lighting, instead of taking a ton of pictures right after the ceremony. We loved this as it gave us the perfect balance of time with our friends and family, as well as some time to ourselves. Since he insists on meeting the couple before the day of the wedding, we were aware of his style and were happy to give him free reign to allow maximum creativity. It was perfect! We cannot recommend Steve strongly enough.

Family Portraits Outdoors

Steve worked with us to help us achieve our goal of getting some outdoor family photos. He was punctual, found us a great location by a nearby river, put us at ease, and took some awesome photos despite wind and a bit of rain. He was easy to communicate with, and delivered as promised. He even got into the water (in November!) to help us get a few shots of our son on the rocks in the river. He was also kind, considerate, and even thought to let our son be the lighting assistant for a few photos, which went a long way toward holding a teenager’s interest. We are very appreciative of Steve’s professional handling of our photo session and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional photographer.

When we had a family member “attend” via Skype from Korea, he took pictures of the IPAD with the family member’s face on it. Family Portraits in Studio

As a family of 5 with a 7 year old and 4 year old twins we didn't;t quite know what to expect when we went in to do our family portrait. We hd every expectation that it could go poorly with one or more of the kids. We were blown away by Steve and his wife. They were able to get the kids to smile if we couldn’t, or to sit if we couldn’t, all while setting up great shots.

Steve was great at moving to different spaces as determined by one of our youngest who was having a hard time sitting still. We didn't’t feel rushed at all to get the shots that we needed, and Steve made sure that we happy with each shot. We are so pleased with the pictures we have that we can’t wait to go back for more.
